2012 Photo Calendar Contest

The 2012 Photo Calendar Contest wants to know if you think your photo is worthy of being submitted to and possibly published in the 2011 calendar for North America Wilderness Backpacking?

If you do, then you’ll have a chance to get your photography published in your name with the potential to distribute anywhere in the world!

North America Wilderness Backpacking invites amateur and professional photographers to this First Annual Photo Calendar Contest. You must read the following rules, terms and conditions before submitting any photos!

North America Wilderness Backpacking's First Annual Digital Photo Calendar Contest (the "Contest") is open to ALL photographers at least 18 years of age. The Contest is open to all participants regardless of residence or citizenship, so long as the laws of their jurisdiction allow participation.

What are we looking for?

  • We are looking for striking digital images of scenes relating to backpacking and hiking in North America.

  • Your images for the Photo Calendar Contest may be taken anywhere in North America.

  • Your images may show backpacks, backpacking and hiking gear, scenic places, natural landscapes, backpackers or backpacking groups, fantastic weather shots, trail signs, wildlife, plant life, or anything else relating to backpacking.

  • The one standing rule for your photos is that each accepted photo must have somewhere in the shot either some kind of backpacking gear (tent, backpack, boot, trekking poles, snowboard/skis, etc…), people backpacking (groups or solo), or something that lets the viewer know that this is specifically a backpacking/hiking photo. Be creative!

  • For the Photo Calendar Contest, we are especially interested in images that showcase the wide range of terrain and landscapes across North America, including all types of forests, grasslands, lakes and rivers, deserts and arid lands, rainforests, etc…

  • Please do not include photos that show facial features in detail. The face can be sillouetted, blurred by movement or weather, or it can be a clear profile or back of head shot, just no recognizable facial features.

  • All photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared.

  • Photos that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, reasonable adjustments to exposure, color and contrast, etc.) will be disqualified.

  • Multiple exposures that have been combined to produce a single "High Dynamic Range" image are certainly acceptable.

  • Images that do not meet these requirements may or may not be judged at the judging panel's sole discretion.

  • Photo captions MUST accompany all submissions, and should include the subject of the image, the location the image was taken, and the name of the photographer(s). Please clarify trail name, junction, lake, river, public land, etc... where photo was captured.

  • All photographs will be credited with the caption "© Person's Name." North America Wilderness Backpacking has final approval of any language that appears on its web site or calendar.

How do you enter?

Each photo must be submitted electronically to contest@North-America-Wilderness-Backpacking.com by using this form.

How to be eligible? How will you be judged?

To ensure eligibility for the contest, entries must have a resolution of 6 million pixels or greater (6 megapixels). Resolution can be calculated by multiplying the pixel width of the image with the pixel height. For example, a photograph taken with a 6 megapixel camera set for the highest resolution and best quality produces images approximately 2832 pixels by 2128 pixels, which are acceptable under the rules (2832 x 2128 = 6 million). Images that do not meet this standard may or may not be judged at the judging panel's sole discretion.

Entries to the Backpacking Photo Calendar Contest may originate in any format -- including, but not limited to digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, or black and white prints -- so long as they are submitted electronically.

Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant us a license (see "Your Rights" below). You must be able to disclose when and where the photo appeared previously to North America Wilderness Backpacking upon request.

Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit. North America Wilderness Backpacking shall determine winner eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the judges are final.

Deadline

Online entries can be uploaded starting now. Deadline for submitting entries to the Photo Calendar Contest is 11:59 pm Eastern Time on December 15, 2011.

Entrants may be asked to submit a paragraph about the story behind the photo anytime on or after submission. Finalists will be announced on or before December 20, 2011.

North America Wilderness Backpacking reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control.

The judging panel will select 12 photos from the Photo Calendar Contest to complete the 12 month North America Wilderness Backpacking annual calendar. By submitting photos to this contest you are saying that you have read and agree to the terms and conditions of the contest and you are releasing the right to your photo to be used, printed, and sold in a 2012 or 2013 annual calendar.
