Map and Compass Training
Map and Compass Training - An Essential Guide to using a map and compass. Simple techniques for anyone!

Triangulation using Bearings Triangulation using bearings really means ‘determining your location’. If you are lost in the forest or just wanting to confirm your location, a handy map with a compass is all you need!
But before you begin, make sure you know
how to orient your map and compass.
This includes True North declination.

Here’s the simple process for getting your bearings and triangulating your location.
While in the backcountry, look around and pick a distinctive point in the distance.
This can be a mountain, radio tower, lake, etc… This point will have to be something that you can identify on the map as well.
Once you’re sure that what you are looking at in the distance is what you’re seeing on the map circle it lightly with a pencil.

A second reference will now be needed.
Now that you have your points identified, it's time to find your location.
Start with the first identified point and place one of the top corners of the compass on that point on the map.
While the compass is layed flat, rotate it (while holding the map firmly still) until “Red Fred is in the shed” again.
When everything is lined up, trace the edge of the compass lightly with a pencil, while holding the map and compass firmly in place with your other hand.
Start tracing from the point you identified on the map until you reach the length of the compass.

With this map and compass training technique, you have narrowed your possible location down to anywhere along the line you’ve just drawn.
But that doesn’t do you any good. Depending on your map, this could still be miles and miles of territory!
Now repeat this process with your second identified point.

Once you’re finished, you will see that at some specific point, the two lines cross.
Guess what?!?! That’s your location!
Now, just to avoid possibility for error, pick a third point and repeat the process.

If you did everything right the first two times, you’ll see that your third line intersects at exactly the same place that the first two intersected. Your map and compass training served you well. Now you know for sure where you are. Time to start making your way out. Learn how to
plot a course using a map and compass.
Find your way out by simply following your compass!
