Garmin GPS Maps for Free
TopoFusion
has free maps that you can plug into your GPS. You’ll have to create your own trails though, because these are just simple topographic gps map downloads.
TomTom website and Garmin Websites also offer free maps for their respective GPS units.
National Geographic
Absolutely the best GPS software quality around and created from highly accurate USGS quads. You can go with the TOPO! State Series or the TOPO! Explorer / Explorer Delux.
Unless you plan to only hike by specific states, I would go with the Explorer Delux version because this is an online based system that is updated regularly and it also covers the entire United States rather than coming to you in DVD form as state chunks.
You could also go with the 3D Explorer National Parks version, which includes very detailed GPS trail maps and topography of 60 different national parks. Find out about NatGeo National Parks Maps.
Customize your own trip maps without the need for an internet connection. Include notes and phone numbers. Create your trip itinerary in map form and then upload to your GPS.
