GORP - Snack and Trail Mix Recipes and/or Ideas

by Sarah
(Orem, UT)

A friend of mine introduced me to a quick, easy and inexpensive solution to putting together a great trail mix for those spur-of-the-moment hiking adventures.

Pick up a large tub of snack mix at any wholesale warehouse such as Costco or Sam's Club. Two of my favorites are a Caramel Apple mix (sweet) and Hunter Mix (salty). These are good by themselves, but I like to take it up a notch.

Collect a few of your favorite snacking items: nuts, dried fruit, M&Ms, Reese's Pieces, Sixlets, etc. Now get individual snack size baggies. Put in a generous portion of your store-bought mix. Now, here is where it gets good.

You can customize individual baggies for each person that will be in your group, based on their preferences.

For me, I'll put in a generous portion of Hunter Mix - which has lots of nuts, seeds, and yummy, crunchy sesame sticks. Then I'll add a few dried cranberries and Sixlets. My friend is crazy about cashews and macadamia nuts, so I like to surprise him by adding a few extra to his baggy.

There is something so perfect in reaching the summit of a difficult hike, pulling out that little baggie of snacking magic and enjoying the view!
