Base Layer

The Base Layer - An essential Guide to outfitting your thermal wicking layer.

The base layer or wicking layer is the one that rests against your skin and provides the most warmth.

There are really good thermal materials on the market today, like capilene, polyester, polypropylene, etc...

They are divided up into two categories:
  • Synthetics like polyester, nylon, elastane...
  • Wools and wool blends

Check out the Materials list to get more details.

These special materials draw moisture away from your skin.

In cold areas, this process helps to keep you warm by preventing sweat from soaking the clothes, getting cold, and then stealing warmth from your body. In hot climates, it helps keep you cool.

Cotton is almost never a good choice in any condition because it holds moisture and doesn't evaporate or move the moisture very well. This leaves you either too cold because the moisture in the cotton will become cold agaisnt your skin. Or it will inhibit the natural sweat/evaporation cycle of your body, keepin you from staying cool in hot conditions.

Wicking materials, on the other hand will:

  • Dry quickly
  • Help keep your body temperature stable
  • Transfer moisture away from the skin

Having one of these thermal layers is simply a win-win!
