There is seriously nothing more fun than hitting the trail with your pooch companion.

There are so many benefits to hiking with your canine

  • You don’t need to find, pay for, and hardest of all, trust, a dogsitter.

  • You get to watch your furry companion have a great time with his tongue lolling out and a big toothy grin under his lips.

  • You get to buy him or her some really awesome dog hiking gear! (which is the most fun part!)

There are so many packs to choose from. It’s important to get one that fits properly and is sufficient for your level of adventuring and “ruffing” it. (Get it? “ruffing” it?)

Tips for Choosing the Best Dog Hiking Pack

  • The Right Fit. - Sizes are usually measured by chest girth. Simply wrap a tape measurer around the dog’s chest directly behind the armpits. Here are specs for sizes:

    • Small - 26-29 inches / 66-74 cm

    • Medium - 29-32 inches / 74-81 cm

    • Large - 32-35 inches / 81-89 cm

    • XL – Anything Bigger

  • Correct Pocket Storage Capacity - This depends on how much gear you will want your pup to carry. Capacity is usually measured in liters. And of course take into account that a smaller animal will be carrying fewer supplies than a larger animal.

Typically, you can judge as follows:

    • Less than 12 liters – Good for day hikes and one nighters for small to medium and even large canines.

    • 12 – 16 liters – Day hike or one nighter for large doggies. For small to medium sized animals 1 – 3 or 4 nights.

    • 16 plus liters – Too much for a small doggie. Longer multiday trips for medium and large four-legged companions.

    • An easier way is to look at the picture of the product and just judge by your eye to fairly easily tell if the backpack is the desired carrying capacity.

  • Style and Design - When shopping for the best backpack for dogs, you'll see they are all made so differently. Some have extra padding in special places and others contour to the animal’s shape.

While others, still, are quite simple. You have to be the judge and know what would be most comfortable for your best friend.
