Sleeping Bags - An essential Guide. Synthetic or Down? Find Great Deals! | Win $500! Enter Contest Here or Scroll Down |

Bags are made of all different materials and made for all different backpacking intentions. When choosing one, there are a few things to consider. The first thing to think about is the Type of Backpacking you plan on doing. If you plan on ski backpacking, then you'll want a portable bed that can keep you warm in cold environments. Maybe you plan on hiking the inner Grand Canyon in the middle of July. In that case you won't need something made for near arctic conditions! Another thing that some people find really important is the weight. In this day and age,
Lightweight and Ultra lightweight
bags are more affordable and do their job very well. They can be made of synthetic materials, which dry quickly when wet.
Or, if you've got a little bit more to spend, then you might be interested in a
Down
version, which is, ounce per ounce, warmer and lighter than synthetic. But they do have their drawbacks, such as, they do not dry easily and they require meticulous maintenance.
The design is also an essential element. Mummy Bags are great because they give you the ability to snug your head in tight, leaving only your face exposed. This reduces heat loss and provides maximum comfort. Your typical rectangular bag is fine for camping on a warm night not far from your vehicle and the rectangle style is really the cheapest you can go. Usually the quality of the rectangle design is lacking as well. A Semi-rectangular design is a morph between the mummy and the rectangular. Last, but not least, is the degree capability. Some of the lightest down and synthetic sacks are only for summer use. If you are going to be backpacking in cold regions, you might want to consider a 0 to -40 degree sleeping bag.
